Anjoola's Website Pokémon Guides Cloning

Cloning, the process that lets everyone get their hands on limited edition Pokémon. Collectors worldwide support this process to help complete their collections. Yet it is highly disputed on how cloning affects rarity of certain Pokémon, and if it is considered cheating. Read on to find out the exact nature of cloning, and how you can clone in your game! For your convenience, you may use the quick links below to jump to sections.

Introduction Back to Top

What exactly is cloning? Much like real-life cloning, Pokémon cloning is when you create an exact duplicate of a Pokémon. For example, I have a level 100 Pikachu holding the item Master Ball. If I clone it, I will have another level 100 Pikachu holding a Master Ball, exactly the same as the one I had before. Now I have two copies of the Pikachu and two Master Balls.

Cloning not only clones the Pokémon, but the item it holds. Make note that every single thing is the same for the clone and the original. You cannot tell the difference between the two.

Because of this, cloning is discouraged in many areas, because hard-to-get Pokémon such as event or legendary Pokémon are now widely available due to cloning. This dilutes the rarity of the Pokémon, something that some people don't like, since it defeats the purpose of a Pokémon being exclusive, or limited edition.

Clones are also unwanted in some competitive battles, as their usage is sometimes considered cheating.

It is up to you to decide whether cloning is right or not. Just be warned that none of the following methods are 100% safe. Using cheating devices may mess up your game, and using in-game glitches might result in loss of save data. However, if you take these risks in mind, and follow the steps correctly, you might be able to successfully clone Pokémon.

Warning! Read all of the steps before you attempt to clone!

Battle Tower Glitch Back to Top

This Emerald cloning glitch is probably the most popular glitch used without cheating devices. Before you can use it however, you need access to the Battle Tower in the Battle Frontier and two Battle Tower-eligible Pokémon.

Below are the steps involved in cloning; follow them exactly or you will risk losing all of your save data!

Be warned, as one mistake will lead to your data loss. Make sure you read the steps before attempting the glitch, and watch this movie here for more clarification.

1 Go to the Battle Tower in Battle Frontier in Pokémon Emerald. You must have beaten the Elite Four before attempting this glitch.
2 Deposit the Pokémon you want to clone in the PC. If you want to clone items, attach an item to that Pokémon.
3 Save the game, and withdraw the Pokémon you deposited (the one to be cloned).
4 Talk to the lady at the counter closest to the PC. She will ask you if you want to make a challenge. Choose "Yes", and select two able Pokémon from your party. The cloned Pokémon does not have to be one of them.
5 The lady will then ask you if it is okay to save. Choose "Yes".
6 The game will freeze for about two seconds.
7 AFTER the freeze, when it says, "Would you like to save the game?" TURN OFF the game. Do not save again, and do not turn off the game during the freeze.
8 When you turn the game on, you will have the cloned Pokémon in your party and in the PC box you deposited it in.

It is necessary that you do not turn off the game during the freeze, because the freeze is a glitch in the game that will most likely erase all your game data if you turn off the game system. Remember, turn off the game after the freeze!

Again, here is a link to a movie where one attempts to clone a Pokémon. I recommend viewing this before even attempting to clone!

Global Trade Station Glitch Back to Top

There are two methods you can use when cloning in the Global Trade Station. If you have a wireless router, then click here for the shorter, if not easier method. However, if you want, you can also use the longer method below. If you use a Wi-Fi adaptor, then you can only use the longer method below!

This cloning method takes place in the Global Trade Station (GTS) in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. This building is located in Jubilife City next to the Trainer's School.

This is not an extremely safe way to clone as it can result in your Pokémon being lost, with no way of getting that Pokémon back. It involves using the Global Trade System.

As the Global Trade System involves asking another Pokémon in return for one you deposit, there is a chance that your Pokémon will be traded away while you are cloning, so be careful! Although the process may seem long, it is vital that you understand how to do every step in order to avoid making fatal errors!

GTS Cloning (Without Router) Back to Top

This type of cloning can be done by anyone with access to Wi-Fi. If you have a wireless router however, you can click here for a much shorter version of cloning. If you don't know what a wireless router is, then click here for a brief description!

As always, there is a risk involved, especially with the fact that you may lose your Pokémon, so read the steps below carefully! I repeat, read the steps VERY CAREFULLY!

1 Go to the Global Trade Station in Jubilife City and talk to the lady behind the counter to connect to Wi-Fi to get onto the Global Trade System.
2 Concentrate here! This step is vital! Every time you deposit a Pokémon, it takes time for the information to be sent through the internet. Just like saving your game, there is a little clock that revolves to the lower right hand side of the screen, which indicates that you should wait while the game is saving, or, while the Pokémon is being sent into Wi-Fi. Remember that now.
3 Select Deposit Pokémon, and choose the Pokémon that you to clone. Now it will ask you what Pokémon you want for it. It doesn't matter what you choose since you aren't really trading using the GTS. Important! You should cask for something no one may have, such as a level 100 Diglett, since this reduces your chance of losing your Pokémon while you try to clone.
4 Read before doing this step! Once it asks, "Are these conditions okay?", and you select "Yes", look to the lower right hand side (which says 'Checking GTS's Status...') for the clock's revolutions. Count between 7 and 8 revolutions of the clock, and turn off the system. You have to turn off the game before the cut scene involving the Pokémon and the Pokéball being sent into Wi-Fi. This gives you enough time to send your Pokémon's data through the internet, but not enough time for your game to save.
5 Turn on the DS. When you select Continue Game, you will get a screen that says the current game file is corrupt, and the previous one will be loaded. Continue, and you should be in the Global Trade Station.
6 To see if you did the glitch correctly, check your party. If the Pokémon you want to clone isn't there, then hurry and connect to the Global Trade Station to get your Pokémon back before someone else gets it. Repeat steps 3 to 6 again until you successfully clone your Pokémon!
7 If the Pokémon you want to clone is your party, then connect to the GTS and withdraw the Pokémon you deposited. You should now have two copies of the same Pokémon!

As the amount of time differs between games on how long it takes to send a Pokémon to Wi-Fi, you should test out how many revolutions of the clock your own game takes to deposit a Pokémon onto the GTS. Count the number of revolutions while depositing a test Pokémon, like a Bidoof, before seeing the trading cutscene. Remember, it's always best to test out the method before you actually try it on a good Pokémon.

GTS Cloning (With Router) Back to Top

Remember, to use this method, you need a wireless router. If you don't know what a router is, click here for a briefing on the router. You'll need to remember the information because it is important when cloning!

As always, there is a risk involved, especially with the fact that you may lose your Pokémon, so read the steps below carefully!dd

3 Read before doing this step! Once it asks, "Are these conditions okay?", and you select "Yes", look at the WLAN light on your router. Once you selected "Yes", the light blinked. Keep on looking at the WLAN light until it blinks again. Immediately turn off your DS once you see the light starting to blink!
4 Turn on the DS. When you select Continue Game, you will get a screen that says the current game file is corrupt, and the previous one will be loaded. Continue, and you should be in the Global Trade Station.
5 To see if you did the glitch correctly, check your party. If the Pokémon you want to clone isn't there, then hurry and connect to the Global Trade System and get your Pokémon back before someone else gets it. Get off of Wi-Fi, and repeat steps 2 to 4 again. It is important that you save your game in front of the Wi-Fi lady with the Pokémon you want to clone before you attempt to clone again.
6 However, if you have done the glitch correctly, you should now have the Pokémon you want to clone in your party or your box, and in the GTS. Retrieve the Pokémon in the GTS, and you've successfully cloned a Pokémon using the GTS glitch!

Wireless Router This is what a wireless router looks like. If you have one, look for something marked "WLAN". When it blinks, that is your signal! If you don't know what I'm talking about, scroll up for details!

Item Cloning Back to Top

This only works in the Japanese versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl! Sometimes you just want to clone an item, but not any Pokémon. While cloning a Pokémon holding an item is a way of cloning items, there is also another method that does not clone Pokémon. What you need is a Ditto holding the item you want to clone, and a Pokémon that knows the move Thief.

1 Have a Ditto hold the item you want to clone, and another Pokémon that knows the move Thief. Put them as the first two Pokémon in your party.
2 Engage in a double battle.
3 Ditto uses Transform on  opponent.
4 Have your other Pokémon use Thief on Ditto.
5 Ditto will hold onto its item, and your other Pokemon will steal the same item.
6 Now you've got two of the same item!

Hopefully at least one of these methods worked for you! If you find any newer, popular methods, feel free to send me them! You can contact me by clicking here.
